Welcome to the ME Treatment Clinic |
|
The ME Treatment Clinic treats patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), and the range of resulting symptoms, using a comprehensive series of techniques. These have been developed through extensive training and experience of the condition, treatment and recovery. The co-founder recovered from ME/CFS in the late 1990s and this led to him jointly establishing the ME Treatment Clinic in Birmingham. |
This is his story:
‘In 1994 I contracted ME/CFS; earlier that year I was a healthy young student ready to start university. However, an operation, many courses of antibiotics, some fairly significant stress and a tendency to burn the candle at both ends followed, and I became heavily ‘run down’. My condition began by continually falling prey to colds and flu which gave way to chronic exhaustion. I developed allergies to dust and perfume but after a while new allergies and food intolerances developed by the day. Initially I needed twelve hours sleep, but after time day and night blurred into one and I felt constant fatigue, simply walking would require a huge effort. Concentration was impossible as my mind spun with incessant thoughts. My life had become merely an existence and a wretched one at that. I’m sure this reflects the feelings of many sufferers of ME/CFS.
‘After about three months of struggling against the exhaustion I booked an appointment to see my GP. He was very understanding, diagnosed me with CFS and helped me to feel supported (I later realised I was quite lucky). But beyond taking regular walks and prescribing amyl-triptyline (a tri-cyclic antidepressant used in low doses to help with sleep) he wasn’t able to offer me any further help. I was referred to a neurologist who was considerate (again I believe I was quite lucky) and I had several tests performed but no further ideas on treatment. Desperate for a way out I felt I had no alternative but to begin my own search for a cure for my ME/CFS.’
